Overview

Overview

Black Eye Galaxy is a spiral galaxy located approximately 17 million light-years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices. It is also known by several names including Messier 64 (M64), NGC 4826, and the Sleeping Beauty Galaxy due to its remarkable dark band of absorbing dust that creates the appearance of an eye.

Characteristics

  • Type: Spiral Galaxy (R)SA(rs)ab, Type 2 Seyfert galaxy with an HII/LINER nucleus
  • Distance: Approximately 17 million light-years away
  • Diameter: Measures about 54,000 light-years across, roughly half the size of the Milky Way
  • Internal Motion: Known for its unusual internal motion, where gas in the outer regions and gas and stars in the inner regions rotate in opposite directions
  • Star Formation: Active star formation takes place where counter-rotating gases collide, with the presence of hot, blue stars and pink clouds of glowing hydrogen

Notable Features

  • Dark Band of Dust: The galaxy has a prominent dark band of absorbing dust partially obscuring its bright nucleus, giving it multiple nicknames.
  • Counter-Rotating Disks: The interstellar medium of M64 consists of two counter-rotating disks of approximately equal mass.

Observations and Capture

  • Discovered by: Edward Pigott in March 1779 and independently by Johann Elert Bode in April 1779
  • Imaging: The galaxy can be captured with moderately sized telescopes and is best observed in May due to its visibility across inhabited latitudes

Classification and References

  • Morphological Classification: (R)SA(rs)ab according to the De Vaucouleurs system
  • References: NASA Science, Cosgrove's Cosmos, Hubble Space Telescope data and more.
