Auroracoin is a secure, decentralised cryptocurrency created as an alternative to the Icelandic Króna. The aim was to avoid government restrictions on the national currency and it was intended to become Iceland's official cryptocurrency. It was launched in January 2014 by an anonymous developer under the name Baldur Friggjar Óðinsson and was initially based on Litecoin but was updated to use a combination of five different hashing algorithms. Despite its initial popularity, it's seen limited growth due to slow adoption, frequent changes in the development team and poor marketing. However, it plans to launch a more aggressive marketing campaign to promote the coin. Uniquely, Auroracoin has introduced extensive changes to its original codebase, incorporating protective measures against known issues in the Bitcoin blockchain.
