Altom Project Information

The Altom Project is a comprehensive initiative focused on upgrading and improving the sanitary sewer system in the Alton region. The project aims to address the requirements outlined in Alton's National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit as part of the Long-Term Control Plan. This plan is designed to mitigate environmental concerns caused by combined sewer overflows during heavy rainfall events. Illinois American Water, the acquirer of the Alton Regional Wastewater System, has committed to investing over $50 million over 10 years to support system reliability and public health.

This project includes the design phase for separating the combined sewer system in specific service areas, such as the Turner Tract, Piasa Valley, and Shields Valley. The goal is to prevent untreated stormwater and wastewater from discharging directly into nearby streams, rivers, and other bodies of water, thus ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for the community.
