42-coin is an extremely rare and deflationary cryptocurrency with a maximum supply of 42 coins, all of which were equally distributed between 2014 and 2016 during the mining stage. It is based on an open-source peer-to-peer internet protocol and uses both private and public transaction support. The project is highly decentralized and community-driven, dating back to 2014.
The coin was introduced on BitcoinTalk by user hendo420, who aimed to create a super rare coin with only 42 coins to be mined. It has the meaning of life associated with it, as depicted in Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," and it is also associated with the number worn by the American baseball player, Jackie Robinson, which was retired by Major League Baseball in 1997.
Prior to its revival in 2016, there was a period where the coin's supply was temporarily made unlimited by a GitHub user named sherlockcoin, causing the price to drop. The community subsequently decided to return to a limited supply, swap old coins for new ones, and introduce a Proof-of-Stake block generation method.
